Network of Cities "Wolrd Surf City Network"

Fomento de San Sebastián is a municipal public company dedicated to the economic-social development of the city of San Sebastián, innovating and managing projects following sustainability and quality criteria by means of forging agreements with our agents.

Grouping agents together in the field of surfing led to setting up the Surf City Donostia cluster that will celebrate its first anniversary in May 2012.

This cluster coordinates to meet emerging challenges in the sector by firmly backing technology and innovation in all business processes and appropriate training as basic tools to improve companies' competitiveness and sustainability.

In February this year, it held its first Consulting Council and brought together nearly 50 agents from many different fields, all ready to participate in developing a context that encourages positive dynamics in the surf sector.

There are three strategic pillars to Surf City Donostia: sustainability, innovation and competitiveness.

These issues are tackled in projects requiring participation from both cluster and external agents, similar to Surf City Donostia internationally, as occurs in the World Surf Cities Network project.

The World Surf Cities Network represents the collaborative network promoted by Fomento de San Sebastián plus the following international participation: Santos in Brazil, Arica inChile, Durban in South Africa, Hossegor in France, Ericeirain Portugal, Las Palmas de Gran CanariaCanary Islands,Gold Coast and Newcastle in Australia and San Sebastiannetwork promoter.

Representatives from the cities included in the World Surf Cities Network met to formalise their constitution in November 2011 in San Sebastian, where we had the chance to hear international business and innovative success stories.

During the first few months of 2012, progress was made in terms of identifying projects and agents in each city to strengthen the joint collaboration bases between agents and institutions in the sector. In addition, work has been done to draw up a communication plan promoting the network's reputation and position it on international surfing markets, particularly in cities that have backed strategies involving economic or tourist development of this sector.
